A new chapter for Type the Word

Hey everyone, hope you're having a great July!

I'm working on Type the Word full time

A few months back I mentioned that I was hoping to go full-time on Type the Word by the end of this year… but I realized I was just too excited to wait any longer. As of a few weeks ago, I left my full-time job to focus on Type the Word full-time.

God's been teaching me that I need to rely on Him. As independent as I think I am, I actually have a deep need for the Lord. I need him to change me, to help me overcome my sin, to truly help others, and for everything else in life. I realized what was holding me back was a desire for certainty. But life doesn’t really offer that—at some point we either trust God or we don’t. With the school year coming up, it felt like the right time to make the leap.

I don’t know many things about the future, but I know that God is good and he will provide. I love this promise from Psalm 37:25. I’m along for the ride, and looking forward to seeing how our Father provides.

25 I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread.

I’m so excited for this work. I've been growing in my conviction that Christian schools and homeschoolers are under-served by tech companies whose goals differ from their own. With Type the Word, I’m starting with typing software that aligns with Christian values, and I’m hoping to also start a revival of childhood Scripture memorization.

27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.”

Ultimately, Type the Word is a business, so I’m going to need to be profitable to make this sustainable, but John 6 was encouraging this week. I’m so happy that I get to be on a mission to do both.

Another passage that's been encouraging to me recently was Romans 10:17

17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Faith comes from hearing the Word of God! I’m so excited to be building tools that place the Word of God in front of kids, that they might come to faith in Christ. I can't wait to see how God moves.

Thanks for being a part of this journey so far! I wouldn't be here without the encouragement I've received from all of you.

Getting down to the nuts and bolts, here are the things that I’ve shipped recently for classrooms:

Integrated Bible Curriculum

Teachers in Type the Word can now choose a typing curriculum based on the Bible curriculum of popular Christian publishers. This makes it easy to create a typing plan that mirrors what your students are already studying in Bible class. So far, I have Bible curriculum from Crossway, BJU Press, St. Mary’s Press, and Ascension Press, and I’m currently pursuing partnerships with more Bible curriculum publishers. If you’re curious to know more, here is a walkthrough of curriculum.

Student Analytics

Teachers can now see analytics for each of their students. That includes their speed, accuracy and how much, how often, and where they are typing. Basically everything you can see in the current /history page as an individual using Type the Word. Here is a demo of student analytics.

A Learn-to-Type Curriculum

Type the Word currently works really well for students who already have basic keyboard familiarity (upper elementary through high school), but thus far there hasn't been a great on-ramp for younger students. That’s what I’m building now: a learn-to-type program that introduces keys in a deliberate sequence, adds dexterity challenges along the way, and includes a “Scribe mode” where beginners can type through Scripture using only the letters they’ve learned so far. Here is a preview of this learning-to-type program.

Type the Word for Homeschooling Families

Over the past few months a lot of people have asked about how to best use Type the Word as a homeschooling parent. This fall, I’m planning to offer a homeschool-parent version of Type the Word so you can use the same curriculum + progress tools without needing Google Classroom. If you’re interested, you can join the waitlist here.

And some smaller improvements

  1. Type the Word now has the KJV translation
  2. You can manually reset your chapter progress
  3. And there is a new simplified home page for personal users

That's everything from me for now. See you all in August!

Hi Reader, Type the Word has a new home: typetheword.com! The old typetheword.site address now redirects automatically, but your account and data haven’t changed. If you use a password manager, don't forget to update the associated domain so that it can associate your login credentials with the new domain. I should have an update with more details out by the end of the week. In the meantime, thanks for using Type the Word!In Christ,Josh
