Type the Word Update September 2024

Type the Word

Hello there Reader,

This month we crossed 54,000 verses typed on TTW, which means we are approaching two Bible's worth of verses!

September Updates

A New Home Page

When I was creating TTW, I wanted new users to immediately be able to try the product without signing up. That's why I made the home page direct them straight to Psalm 23.

This decision may have been ok for some of you, but I think it makes onboarding and understanding the product more difficult. From a search engine perspective, this home page style has prevented TTW from ranking.

In this home page refresh, I added more contextual details for new users explaining "what this site is about," while still giving them an immediate chance to type.

If you have feedback on the new home page or on anything related to TTW's onboarding please reach out. I want this product to be accessible for everyone.

Fixes

The keyboard shortcuts I introduced last month didn't work for Windows / Linux. Those are now fixed!

  • ctrl + backspace - deletes your previously typed word.
  • ctrl + shift + backspace - restarts the verse.
  • ctrl + shift + , - opens the new Settings menu
  • ctrl + shift + Y - navigates to /history

A scripture I have been thinking about

14 “Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Joshua 24:14-15

I have heard this scripture many times and usually the emphasis is on "But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." This past week, "choose this day whom you will serve" stood out to me. It's a strong call to action. We need to pursue Christ today.

This was convicting to me last week. I had an intense week at work, my desire for approval had tarnished my witness. But my mom reminded me of Philippians 3:13-14

12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

The God of the Universe made us his own. He didn't see our sin and avoid us, but he made a way for our relationship to be restored through his Son.

I want to encourage you today. His grace is new this morning! Forget about yesterday. Choose Christ today and strain forward in honoring him.
