Type the Word Update July 2024

July 2024

Type the Word

Hey there Reader,

It's Josh, creator of Type the Word. I'm emailing you because you signed up for TTW, and I am starting a newsletter to keep people informed about TTW as it changes.

I created Type the Word last fall for an easier way to type through the Bible. After launching it, I took some time off the project, but received many kind emails thanking me for it and usage has been growing month to month. Here is a chart of the verses typed so far.

28,936 verses have been typed, which means as a group we have almost typed through an entire Bible worth of verses!

Your discipline in typing through the Bible has been so motivating to me. So I have been working on the project again, and I am starting this newsletter to keep you up to date.

Logistics

I am roughly planning to send these emails once a month.

If you are not interested in receiving these emails here is an unsubscribe link.

I will be sending these from a new email josh@typetheword.site. Feel free to respond to these emails and they will go straight to my inbox. You can also still message me on my personal email.

Ok. Onto the actual update!

July Update

Created a Changelog notice

The changelog is another way I'll be communicating with you all. It's a more immediate way to see what is happening if you are curious.

I created this twinkle notice above the changelog link in the footer to indicate when there are changelog updates you haven't seen. Visiting the /changelog page dismisses this notice.

Updated TTW to remember where you last typed

TTW now remembers where you last typed. When you are logged in and load the home page (/) TTW redirects you to the last location you typed.

You can also navigate to your last typing location by clicking the TTW logo in the header.

Migrated to App Router (Programming Update)

Another big change this past month was migrating to App Router.

Originally, I built Type the Word on some new tech so that I could try TRPC and Axiom. Now that it's growing, I have migrated to more stable platforms to lower the maintenance burden.

  • You may have noticed some short outages around this time! Sorry for the disruption. I don't think there will be this big of an architectural change again.
  • Type the Word is open source. If you are ever curious to see how it works, check out the Github repo here.

Feature Feedback

I want to make TTW better! I would love any feedback you have on some of the new features I have been thinking about. Your thoughts will directly impact what I do next.

A scripture I have been thinking about

3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, 4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.

2 Peter 1:3-4

The world is corrupt, but God has given us promises to hold onto. Those promises give us access to him and help us escape the corruption of the World so we can enjoy life with him right now.

Thanks for reading, typing, and encouraging me to keep meditating on the Bible.

Hey everyone, hope you're having a great July! I'm working on Type the Word full time A few months back I mentioned that I was hoping to go full-time on Type the Word by the end of this year… but I realized I was just too excited to wait any longer. As of a few weeks ago, I left my full-time job to focus on Type the Word full-time. God's been teaching me that I need to rely on Him. As independent as I think I am, I actually have a deep need for the Lord. I need him to change me, to help me...

Hi Reader, Type the Word has a new home: typetheword.com! The old typetheword.site address now redirects automatically, but your account and data haven’t changed. If you use a password manager, don't forget to update the associated domain so that it can associate your login credentials with the new domain. I should have an update with more details out by the end of the week. In the meantime, thanks for using Type the Word!In Christ,Josh
