Help your students break the hunting-and-pecking habit

Hello Reader!

Type the Word’s typing curriculum just got a sweet upgrade that I'm excited to share!

As I’ve been chatting with y’all these past few weeks at conferences, I’ve realized the question isn’t always “How do I teach my students to type?” Often, it’s “How do I help them unlearn the hunting and pecking they’ve picked up on an iPad?”

Students may know where the letters are without knowing how to move their hands around a keyboard. They need more than a passage to practice—they need someone to show them what to do.

That’s why Type the Word now includes an animated hand guide.

As students type, the guide shows them which finger to use and how their hands should move to reach each key. It’s available throughout the student experience, including lessons, assignments, and speed assessments.

Once students feel comfortable with the keyboard, they can toggle it off and practice without the extra help.

My hope is that this makes it easier for you to help students build good typing habits while they’re learning who God is and how much he loves them through Scripture.

I’ve also put together a new video answering why I chose the Scriptures I did, how the lessons help students progress, and walking you through how to get started with your class.

If your class is still hunting and pecking, I’d love for you to try the hand guide and let me know how it goes.

And if you know of any other teachers that might benefit from this demo, please share it with them!

In Christ,
Josh

Hi Reader, I'm excited to share that Passage of the Day just got a big upgrade! Justin and Anders are joining me in writing these emails! Meet Justin Gerber Justin lives in Clarkston, Georgia, with his wife and two-year-old son. We met at church shortly after I moved to Atlanta, and I’ve been grateful for his hospitality, his pursuit of God in fatherhood, and our friendship as accountability partners. He enjoys soccer, ultimate frisbee, reading, woodworking, and the outdoors. And a fun fact:...

Hi Reader, For a long time, I’ve made Bible memory cards by hand, with the full passage on one side and first-letter prompts on the other. Something like this: My Bible Memory Pocket Notebook A few months ago, a friend suggested a tool to generate them. Today I'm happy to share that you can now generate cards like this one for free for your classroom. Side 1 Print memory cards for your class The new Bible memory card generator lets you choose any verse in the Bible, select from most major...

Hi Reader, I’ve been reading Make It Stick, and it’s changing how I think about tests. They’re not just a way to find out what you know. They can help you learn what you don’t. One of the biggest points of the book is that it’s easy to think you understand something, but testing helps you see whether you actually do. The insight I’ve taken from it is that testing can also help form long-term memory—not just reveal what you missed, but help you learn it. That’s why I’m excited that you can now...
